Liebster Award!

I was nominated for the Liebster award by KG at KG's Movie Rants! Thanks a bunch!

Rules:
1. Answer the 11 questions given by the person who nominated you
2. Nominate other bloggers (up to 11) and give them 11 questions to answer.

KG's questions:

1. Snack of choice when you go watch a movie?
Popcorn is always a winner. Or chocolate -- but that can get dangerous.

2. What movie title best describes your love life?
I'm torn between Mission: Impossible and Minority Report.

3. What movie do you think should never have been made?
The 2014 Annie. Such a terrible and totally unnecessary movie. But really I should have just not watched it.

4. What movie from your childhood would you love to see remade?
So many of my childhood movies are being remade -- or have been already. It wouldn't exactly be a remake, but The Silver Chair. I liked the BBC version as a kid, and was really excited at the possibility of a new one led by Will Poulter as Eustace, was let down.

5. Do you prefer to see movies alone or with a partner and why?
If a movie is extremely melodramatic or overly serious or a tear-jerker, I find that I can enjoy them better and less self-consciously alone. And I absolutely must watch comedies and silly movies with people because it's much more fun to laugh at things with people. Most of the time I would choose to watch with people.

6. If you could have dinner with any two movie stars (dead or alive) who would they be and why?
Oh boy. Sam Rockwell sprang to mind almost immediately. He's been a favorite actor of mine for a long time, and I'm sure would be a great dinner companion. And I'll say J.J. Abrams for the second, because I dreamed I met him a few nights ago, and afterward realized that if I really met him I'd want to thank him for Super 8 and 10 Cloverfield Lane, and pick his brain about storytelling.

7. Do you put ketchup on your fries or do you pour the ketchup on the side and dip your fries? Pour and dip for maximum control of ketchup quantity.

8. What song is currently on repeat on your playlist?
This:

9. If you could be any movie character, who would you be and why?
Mark Watney, because to (hypothetically) experience what he (fictionally) did would be incredible and life-changing. Hypothetically. And as long as I couldn't mess anything up, because if I could I would die so fast.

10. If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Can I pick The Lord of the Rings and pretend they're one film? If not I'd probably die of indecision and then go with The Princess Bride. Or... or... arg.

11. What movie did you expect to hate but ended up loving?
Well, I didn't end up loving it by any stretch of the imagination, but if you were to look at anything I wrote about it before it came out you would see how incredibly much I expected to hate Batman v Superman. I was right in most of my assumptions, but they didn't cause me to hate the movie. And while I didn't come close to loving it I do think that it's an alright movie that's worthwhile. I can see why people like it, and I saw in it things you can't find in other movies. A movie that I expected to hate when I first saw the trailer but changed my mind about way before it released was The Martian, and I definitely ended up loving that one. But I can't remember ever changing my mind from hate to love during the run of a film.

I'd like to nominate these great blogs: Oh So Geeky, Miss Daydreamer's Place, Dreaming Under the Same Moon, Through Two Blue Eyes, Revealed in Time, J and J Productions, Hamlette's Soliloquy, and A Free Mind.

Here are my questions:

1. Favorite movie genre, and why?
2. Favorite movie that's an adaptation of a book you've read?
3. An actor or actress you're enjoying who you've only recently noticed?
4. A favorite "unexpected surprise" movie?
5. A movie that has a cast catered to you?
6. An obscure movie that you think is great and you wish more people knew about?
7. A movie that has a great soundtrack?
8. A movie that reminds you of summer?
9. A movie you loved as a kid and still love (not because of nostalgia)?
10. Plot device pet peeve?
11. Ending preference for movies, and why?

If you're not interested in doing a post on your own blog to answer them, feel free to answer them in the comments, because now that I've gone through the effort of thinking up the questions, I'm curious to see some answers! Even if I didn't tag you, I'd love to see your answers!

  3. Love the answers to all your questions. J.J. Abrams would be an interesting person to hang out with. It'd be fun to pick his brain about his move from Star Trek to Stars, and the Force Awakens. The Princess Bride is a great movie to watch for the rest of time.

  4. Congrats on being nominated. That's always exciting!

I totally agree about the new Annie. Completely unimpressive and pointless as films go.

Okay, and because you asked some questions I'm dying to answer, I will post them on my blog and let you know when I've answered them. Thanks for letting me answer even though I wasn't nominated. :)

    1. Thanks Carissa!

Oh yes. Glad you agree. There are worse movies in my opinion, but none with so utterly pointless an existence. :P

Yes, do!! I'm so happy you like my questions so much. :D I'll look forward to seeing your post!

  6. THANKS so much, Sarah. What fun. I'm definitely looking forward to putting this together - and answering your fun questions. Love your answer about seeing movies with others if it's a comedy. How true that is. It's more fun to laugh with a group than it is when we're by ourselves. :)

    1. You're welcome Rissi! I'll keep a lookout for your post and answers. It's amazing how true that is. Even with movies that are comic-relief-heavy, having people laughing with you makes it so much better. :)

  7. Thanks for tagging me Sarah! I had the exact same experience with Batman v Superman. I'd been expecting to dislike it so much that I guess I couldn't really help but like it better than I'd thought. But it did definitely have some good things and I'm glad I watched it, even just as a reminder not to be prejudiced about things. ;) Plus I just watched the old superman movies with Christopher Reeve and I love those.

    1. You're welcome! I'm glad you had fun with it! Haha, yeah, I definitely got reminded that I shouldn't be prejudiced. Still, if I'd expected to love it I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it at all, so it worked out! :P

  8. I thought I'd come and comment on this post first, since it was actually Carissa's blog (hadn't been there in a long, long time; and accidentally got there from another blog's surprising post that negated something interesting I don't think I noticed when I saw her Blogger profile awhile ago; backtrack a couple MORE steps to get to what I intended to just check quickly (and there's another story of events about that, starting Aug. 2013) before bed the other night; whew!! haha; no contact with any of those...)

Anyway, yes, Carissa's blog... She mentioned "In Time" and you commented about that (then I viewed your profile since I hadn't noticed her link to your blog). Totally forgot about that one! Definitely wanted to see it though. :-)

I can write a lot, so I've been pondering how much to cram into my answers to some of these questions. I'm not good at many of these and can't think of an answer; I've spent all my time trying to think about the dinner one, as you'll see. :-P So the ones you answered first, obviously (and I actually thought of 2 questions)...

    1) Yes, popcorn!! It was a lifelong dream to know how they made the theater popcorn ("butter" especially), and it was miraculously revealed to us at the theater 2 summers ago. 8=) Well, the topping. Already had an idea about the popping seasoning/salt, but hadn't tried yet... It's amazing. :-O Can you tell this is a big deal to me? ;-) So if you want to know about the popper, kernels, oil, seasoning, or butter... Unless y'all just do microwave, haha.

Not sure what movie this happened with... The Giver? Lucy? It was after Edge of Tomorrow and TFiOS, but definitely before TMNT. :-)

    2) M: I, I love that. I don't get Minority Report though... (maybe I'm forgetting some detail/reference).

"How to be Single?" What would I like it to be? You've Got Mail, The Lake House (IIRC, not a possibility; avoiding spoiler), Return to Me (nooooo, maybe a bit morbid/strange :-D). True Lies? LOL (Makes me mad every time I think about this; never seen it properly; still no Blu-ray; and Cameron doesn't want to make terrorism comedies, just 10 more Avatars (not seen it), so no sequel...)

    3) Speed 2? No idea, haha.

    4) TMNT already happened. :-/ Let's just say one I happen to be waiting for now (small connection to #6): I Know What You Did Last Summer (probably #facepalm)

    5) With someone!

    (continued...)

    1. 6) I thought "movie star" meant in front of the camera, but if we're breaking the rules... ;-)

I wouldn't mind joining you with J.J. And then I'd want to ask why he "abandoned" Alias after 2 amazing seasons... and made Lost.

And because when I heard a couple weeks ago that there's going to be TV series of Training Day and Shooter (haven't seen either, yet), and then (unrelated) I realized I should name a child "Antoine Fuqua," I'll include him. Haha, I just have a long-running-thing where I try to mention Antoine Fuqua whenever possible (because the name). And kinda related random fact: my middle name is Anthony. :-/

Oh, and speaking of naming children, I could tell J.J. that years ago I already decided that I should name a girl Sydney (Alias, of course; not Sidney from Scream).

Then I wanted to choose some girl(s). But unlike most, I'm hard-pressed to think of any "celebrity" I LIKE like/find attractive (maybe that sounds bad, but I just like regular ones!!), and couldn't think of anyone else for any other reason. So, a countdown (prob should just pick the last 2)...

#4 Jennifer Love Hewitt (back in the day)
#3 Summer Glau (in Sarah Connor Chronicles? LOL)
#2 Megan Boone (not long ago, but not sure now...)
#1 Rachel Leigh Cook (saw her on first season of Perception, or however much I watched; and just noticed on IMDb she was on a fave show too!?)

      *shrug* Well that was interesting...

      7) Ha, I like your answer! :-) I never really use ketchup though, unless it's a certain type of fries...

      8) Never had any sort of "playlist" (oh, except on MySpace...!), but I like a total variety of different songs. I discover a lot of new stuff in movie/TV soundtracks. But let's say Anything Goes by Florida Georgia Line, Beautiful by Ben Rector, and Mind Reader by Dustin Lynch. *insert YouTube videos here*

      9) I thought about answering this with another question... =) But maybe another time!

10 and 11 are the kind I really don't know how to answer, haha. And I'm gonna stop for now... I'll leave another (short?) comment tomorrow or whenever to answer your questions and ask my 2! Of course I'll also reply to your reply on the About page. :-)

    2. You found me through Carissa's blog? That's cool -- she has a great blog. :) Yeah, In Time is pretty neat. I don't love it, but it's worth a watch.

I have always wondered what's actually in theater popcorn "butter." It tastes good, but not much like butter. :P My favorite way to eat popcorn in air-popped at home with a little olive oil and a lot of melted butter, sometimes with black pepper and parmesan cheese. Weird, I know.

Yeah, the joke is a little bit of a stretch with Minority Report. You got some good ones. True Lies. Haha!

Yeah, I couldn't help but break the rules with #6. Directors are just so interesting. If I wanted to talk movies with a famous person seems like an unmissable opportunity!

Summer Glau would be cool I bet. Have you seen Firefly? I didn't make it far into Perception either. And wasn't she in Psych for a while?

I'm not a huge ketchup eater either.

Variety is good. I find songs I like watching movies too. It's fun, especially when I love the film it's in and listening to it reminds me of it. :D

  9. OK, your questions...

    1) Action, thriller, mystery, "scary," twist-y, sci-fi (but not weird sci-fi), etc.; and I'm usually interested in anything with time-travel or some sort of "element of time." :^)

    2) B-Book? :-/

    3) Don't know...

    4) "Surprise" as in twist, or...? Not a "favorite," but one not too long ago was Brake that I seemed to enjoy more than a lot of people -- the ending especially, which is a usual problem area (see #11). Oh, or maybe You're Next -- I'll say a bit more about that when I comment on The Guest, which I just saw.

    5) No idea!

    6) Grosse Pointe Blank?

    7) Grosse Pointe Blank! :-)

    8) I dunno... The 'Burbs?

    9) Back to the Future Parts I & II (and hey, The 'Burbs too).

    10) Not a "plot device" per se, but stupid computer stuff... which is almost all computer stuff. :-/

    11) Anything that isn't a disappointment or letdown! Because I'm usually expecting something "more," and am too-often thinking, "That's it?," etc...

Now a couple questions for you. :-)

What movie has ever been spoiled the worst for you (if any) and how?

What movie (or 3) coming out later this year are you most excited about/looking forward to?

    1. 1 - Nice genres. ll those together in one movie sounds like an awesome movie!

4 - I meant more like a movie that surprised you with how good it was, but surprise twist works too. Haven't seen Brake. It looks intense.

      6&7 - Haha! Yes!

      8 - Good one!

9 - No Back to the Future III though?

10 - Oh yeah, I don't even know that much about computers, but I've noticed that happening.

11 - Good answer. I know what you mean.

Okay, hmm. I've gotten so good at avoiding spoilers now I'm having a hard time thinking of one. Usually I spoil them by reading the book first. :P Oh here's one; The Cabin in the Woods. I knew the very end, but I didn't know how it was going to get there.

Star Trek Beyond most. Also Jason Bourne and Doctor Strange... oh Rogue One! But that one feels far away.

      Delete
    2. 4) Brake is still on Netflix. ;-) I didn't go back and check the end of both, but after The Guest's ending, I believe the last words spoken were almost the same as Brake. :-O LOL

      9) See below...

For spoiled, mine was Saw! :-/ IMDb boards again, shouldn't have been there first... And Titanic.

I dunno myself, since I don't really even know what's coming out! And I... I... I've never been into the Star Trek/Star Wars stuff (same thing, right? sorry ;-)) and... don't know anything about it. :-?

No Back to the Future Part III because I don't care for the old west thing -- just doesn't seem like it fits with the first two! Although it has been a long time since I saw it when I was younger, so...

I think I'd say I'm not generally a fan of "westerns," but I'm not actually sure?! Because I do want to see Sukiyaki Western Django; The Good, the Bad, the Weird; and the 3:10 to Yuma remake... but haven't yet.

And we started watching Longmire last fall, after coming to Netflix for the 4th season, and it has a western-ish feel, though it's modern. And spreading it out over those months, we were just finishing up the last 2 episodes of S4 the last couple nights instead of Stranger Things, haha.

I would like there to be "more" happening (less standalone-ish eps, more serialization), but it flows well through each season. They sure packed a lot into these last 2 episodes, and WOAH I wasn't expecting the finale ending, after the previous ones.

I kept replaying the last couple mins... "Do you ever feel you've created more evil than you've stopped?" ! A review I just found said, "goose bump inducing to the extreme." I wouldn't go quite that far, hehe.

I was thinking Ozymandias-esque. Know what Ozymandias is? A poem, and a Breaking Bad episode (S5E14) that might be the greatest TV episode ever in its overall-disappointing-to-me last half-season. (Fly, S3E10, could be the worst, LOL) It was chilling when Bad's Walter was reading the poem ('cause what led up to it) in the previews: https://youtu.be/T3dpghfRBHE (spoiler free)

Anyway, the new season arrives Sep. 23 and I'm glad I didn't finish sooner because I can't wait! Then I searched online and saw all these crazy possible spoilers that I kinda wish I hadn't. :-O

You can safely play that S4 trailer if you want. I did before starting the series and just checked it again. Without context, it's spoiler free.

Before last night, I was simply going to "mention" Longmire. :^)

    3. Oh okay. I always considered BTTF parts 2 and 3 to be about equal, but the old west stuff is pretty different. The 3:10 to Yuma remake is only decent because of it's cast...

My dad is interested in Longmire I think. It does look like a good quality show. Interesting poem, and it sounds great in Bryan Cranston's voice!

    4. Interested... as in already watched/watching, or wants to? :-) But that's cool!

I was going to reply to this right away that day I think, but had facepalmed about that days/date thing on the About page. :-/ Plus needed to explain about the "other site" stuff... I'll get that.

That was just a couple days delay, but then there was another issue (and still is), sadly. *shrug* Could have still posted several days ago, but other stuff, other stuff! just wanted to finally check in quick. ;-)

      Take care and God bless,
      Matt
